"Don't buy our music from iTunes"- The Cure

The Cure (meh) have told fans not to buy their new EP from iTunes as it will cost them a ludicrous £7.99 for 5 songs. I've commented before on the way iTunes has the industry by the balls and when it comes down to it, the label and the band stand more chance of making more money gouging £7.99 out of fans for a remix EP than they do out of a successful full length. The back end through the site is criminal. It's one of the few circumstances when the band suffer, the fans suffer and the label actually suffer too.

Music-News.com gives Devil In The Distance 5/5

There's always something about Brit rap that makes me wince. There have been too many braggers and losers, rappers with half a decent song and an album full of half rubbish songs. So Devil in the Distance by Marvin would have a lot of prejudices to overcome to please me.

From Brixton, some of Marvin's songs explicitly reference London (A track called Trocadero being an obvious example), though they could be about an inner city, any secondary school or any council estate. His lyrics, though a little broad, are clever and cleanly delivered. He raps about what's around him and has an eye and ear for the intricacies relationships and speech. The music is polished but also has the rough influences of grime and dirty beats.

What I like is Marvin takes his ego out of his work. He makes political statements without being polemic. Get By (Be Good) is a list of ills (from education to CCTV to housing) without forcing the issue of how hard it is, nor does it offer any solution. Goodbye is about gun crime, without judging if it's a good or bad thing but about why it is.

He's also effective at building ideas from lots of tiny details, and this is not better demonstrated than on Richard's Nan . This song is a hundred flashing camera phone photos, burning an image of community one mosaic at a time. The raft of Marvin's community are represented: the boys, the girls, the gangs, the racists, the gays; a reflected conscience made of the sum of it's parts.

Devil in the Distance is an intelligent album that tells its own story. It is confident enough not to ask for anything from you as it has its own energy to survive. I am very pleased.

TheBeatSurrender review That One TIme

TheBeatSurrender.co.uk reviewed 'That One Time'. Check it out...

Marvin - That One Time

Everyones favourite Martian is obviously going to be ET so Marvin wasn’t on to a winner when he went as Marvin The Martian previously. It seems though he’s realised the competition was too and has now dropped his name down to simply Marvin.

While the nasme may have changed the style and substance of his music hasn’t, he’s still mixing elements of hip-hop, grime, dance and pop with some brilliantly autobiographical lyrics, this time on That One Time it’s taking you back to his school days.

While I do like this track, the highlights for me are hearing the two mixes of the single, particularly Aidan Lavelle’s Mix which really strips away leaving only a small fraction of his vocals.

The album Devil In The Distance is out next week and a review will feature on this very website!

If you're using the iTunes search don't expect to find 'That One Time' with the rest of my releases. That would be entirely too sensible. Expect to find it under that Latin artist who always releases my music. Oh yeah. Buying music is way too easy, we thought we'd make it a little more Crystal Maze.

Kid Rock doesn't like taste of Apple

Kid Rock is boycotting Apple's iTunes because he believes that the artist back end is too low. Kid Rock's a few tens of millions down the line at this point so is in that beautiful position to be able to reject distribution, the most important online distributor no-less, some of us are not in that position and I don't want to piss anybody at Apple off because I'm a bitch and I have no choice but what Kid Rock says is not entirely untrue. The back end for artists out of an iTunes sale is outrageous.

This story comes off the back of billionaire geniuses Kiss announcing that they're not going to record a new album until fans start getting real and start to calm down with their downloading ways. Again, Gene Simmons and the gang are so rich it's beyond consideration but it's well documented that Kiss have many millions of fans worldwide and a Kiss record regardless of era or quality will do well, the fact that they've taken this stance affects the fans who want to buy Kiss records, or want to hear Kiss records, they appear to be doing back to the fans what the fans are doing to the industry; I respect that...saying that, I give a lot of music away and I love my fans, I will probably always sell and leak music in tandem, that's kinda the way it has to be in this era. Will illegal downloading ever slow? My thing is that there are kids now, who have grown up with downloading, there was no other, buying a C.D? What? I had broadband as long as I can remember. Can we breakthrough that mentality or have we lost a generation?

I say, Universal, Warners, EMI, Sony etc. get together and build like 50 million record players, give them away and stop releasing music on the internet completely, no digital formats, records are on Vinyl again and if you want it, you have to buy it! Unless you're listening to one of those horrible audio rips.

Marvin Luther the Superhero

My new single is out today. 'Superhero' is downloadable in its many forms all in one neat little bundle £2 on iTunes! That's 'Superhero', 'Wait' (B-Side), 'Superhero Nimble Mix', 'Superhero Indie Synth Mix', 'Superhero Why Lout? Mix' and 'Superhero Dub Mix' all for just £2!! But don't take my word for it, listen to the good people at Room Thirteen who definitely seem to think it's worth a punt. UPDATE: I actually can't find it on iTunes this morning. They always put my stuff up late. It's on 7Digital already though, but it's £3.99 *

But Marvin, how does that make you "Marvin Luther"? Well it doesn't, in fact many people would consider the title of this post sacrilege. Me, not so much. A few weeks back I did an interview with 1Xtra about Martin Luther's big speech talking from a rapper's perspective about how he put his words together, his flow, his timing etc. well that documentary aired yesterday and you can listen back to it on that genius BBC replay thing HERE.

I am recording a top secret project this week, which will mean I can blog a little bit. So I will.

Go buy 'Superhero'

UPDATE 2: Direct link to 'Superhero' on iTunes

UPDATE 3: The package will be £1.99 on iTunes in the morning.
